BusFit is an independent public transport journey planning app currently designed for users in Wellington, New Zealand. The App helps users search routes, compare journey options, estimate fares, and identify walking-based or timing-based saving opportunities.
We are committed to handling personal information in accordance with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020.
1. Information we collect
Depending on how you use BusFit, we may collect or process the following types of information.
1.1 Location information
BusFit may collect or process your device location when you choose to use location-based features, including:
- finding your current location;
- planning a route from your current location;
- showing nearby stops or journey options;
- supporting walking guidance or navigation-related features;
- calculating walking distance, walking time, or route alternatives.
This may include precise location information if you allow precise location access on your device.
We use location information only to provide App functionality, improve service quality, manage technical performance, and protect the App from misuse.
We do not sell your location information. We do not use your location information for advertising or cross-app tracking.
You can disable location permissions at any time through your device settings. If location permissions are disabled, some features of the App may not work properly.
1.2 Route search and journey information
When you use BusFit, we may process information such as:
- origin and destination searches;
- route search requests;
- selected journey options;
- estimated travel time;
- estimated public transport fares;
- estimated fare savings;
- walking distance and walking time;
- stops, transfers, and journey segments;
- use of features such as Walk & Save or Smart Wait.
This information is used to provide journey planning, estimate possible fare-saving options, improve App performance, detect errors, and manage API usage and quota.

BusFit relies on third-party services to provide some features. These may include:
- Google Maps Platform services, such as maps, places, route planning, geocoding, directions, or related location services;
- app platform services provided by Apple or Google;
- hosting, database, server, analytics, crash reporting, and infrastructure providers;
- other technical service providers that help us operate and secure the App.
When you use features that require maps, route planning, place search, geocoding, or location-based results, relevant information may be processed by third-party service providers for the purpose of providing those features.
These third parties may process information according to their own privacy policies and terms.
BusFit is an independent app. It is not operated by, endorsed by, or officially affiliated with Metlink, Greater Wellington Regional Council, Google, Apple, or any public transport operator unless explicitly stated.

- service providers who help us operate, host, secure, analyse, or improve BusFit;
- third-party API providers where necessary to provide maps, route planning, place search, or location-based services;
- legal, regulatory, or government authorities if required by law;

We do not share your personal information with third parties for their own advertising purposes.
5. API protection, quota management, and abuse prevention
To protect BusFit from misuse and unexpected operating costs, we may collect and use technical information such as IP address, request frequency, device information, server logs, and usage patterns.
This information may be used to:
- detect excessive or abnormal request activity;
- prevent automated abuse or scraping;
- apply rate limits;
- block suspicious traffic;
- protect third-party API quota;
- maintain service stability for normal users.

We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from loss, misuse, unauthorised access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction.
Where reasonably practicable, data transmitted between the App, our servers, and third-party service providers is protected using encryption in transit, such as HTTPS.
However, no app, website, server, database, or internet transmission is completely secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.
